Lastovo, the Secret Island of the Adriatic

Fisherman's House lastovo croatia

Before heading to Hvar, we spent a few days on the small and secluded island of Lastovo.

Located about three hours by ferry from Split, this island belongs to an archipelago of more than forty islets. Once a restricted military zone in former Yugoslavia, Lastovo has remained wild, authentic, and untouched — a rare refuge of tranquility.

The ferry ride sets the tone: as you move away from the Dalmatian coast, the sea turns a deeper shade of blue, and Lastovo appears on the horizon like a well-kept secret. Time slows down here and only the rhythm of the waves and the quiet villages of stone houses guide your steps.

What to See and Feel on Lastovo

/// Uvala Lučica

A charming old fishing village with colorful houses lining the waterfront. At Konoba Lučica, I had one of the best meals of the trip: grilled calamari with fresh vegetables, simple yet unforgettable. Everything is local and fresh. With the salty breeze, a glass of Pošip white wine, and the sound of the waves, the experience was pure perfection. The owner — who is also the cook — sat with us at the end of the meal, sharing stories about the island and even offering us a homemade liqueur.

/// Saplun Island

A small paradise that stands out in the Adriatic. Surrounded by pine trees, it features a rare white sandy beach, something unusual for the region. The island is uninhabited and has no facilities, which makes it even more special. You can reach it with your own boat or through organized excursions from Lastovo. As we were staying in Zaklopatica, we arranged with local sailors to take us there.

/// Korita Bay, Mihajla & Skrivena Luka

Each cove has its own atmosphere:

Skrivena Luka: meaning “hidden harbor,” this quiet cove is surrounded by pine forests and feels timeless.
Korita Bay: perfect for swimming in crystal-clear waters.
Mihajla: ideal for sunsets, with a casual bar for a drink. Every August, Mihajla hosts Lastovo – Otok Glazbe Festival, where local pop, rock, and jazz bands perform just a few meters from the sea. Alongside concerts, there are DJ sets, workshops, exhibitions, beach tournaments, and more.

A vibrant yet unpretentious experience — check dates in advance, as they change every year.

Where to Stay

We stayed at Hotel Triton Zaklopatica, very welcoming, with a lovely restaurant by the bay serving fresh fish and local specialties. Nearby, Aragosta is also a great choice, with tables set right by the sea.

Lastovo in Essence

Lastovo is not about “things to do.” It’s about how it makes you feel: swimming in hidden coves, walking under pine trees, dining slowly, and watching the stars in the silence of the night.

Practical Tips for Visiting Lastovo

How to get there: Ferry from Split to Ubli port (around 3 hours). Book tickets in advance during summer.
Getting around: Rent a car or scooter — public transport is limited. I recommend renting a car in Split and taking the large ferry across, as it’s usually cheaper and offers more options. If not, you can rent locally once on the island.
Where to stay: Zaklopatica and Pasadur are the most charming villages for accommodation.
Best time to visit: May to September. July and August are livelier but still peaceful.
What to bring: Comfortable shoes, snorkel gear, and some cash (cards aren’t accepted everywhere and the tax to withdrawl is 10euros).
