Hvar: Best Beaches to Explore

the trail to Mekicevica beach

Hvar, one of Croatia’s most enchanting islands, has been inhabited since prehistoric times and flourished under Venetian rule from the 13th century, leaving a legacy of elegant architecture, fortified towns, and sun-drenched terraces. Today, it is more than its vibrant nightlife — a haven of hidden beaches, charming villages, and turquoise waters that invite slow, sensory exploration.

The Beaches

/// Pokonji Dol & Mekicevica

Pokonji Dol offers more structure with sunbeds and a beach bar, perfect for comfort and convenience. From there, a short coastal trail leads to Mekicevica, a smaller, peaceful cove. The path passes Pachamama Beach Club & Restaurant, a scenic lunch stop, and just a few minutes further is Robinson Bay, home to Robinson Hvar Restaurant for fresh seafood with a sea view.

/// Podnožica

Reaching Podnožica Beach is already part of the adventure. To get there, you’ll drive through a narrow, one-way tunnel carved into the rock — completely dark and without lights. At first it may feel unusual, but once you emerge on the other side, you’re rewarded with one of Hvar’s most stunning coastlines.

Podnožica is a pebble beach with crystal-clear waters, surrounded by pine trees and peaceful scenery. It’s the kind of spot where you can truly disconnect, swim in pristine waters, and enjoy a more authentic side of the island, away from the crowds.

On the way to Ivan Dolac, make sure to stop at Sanpjerin Beach Bar. With its relaxed atmosphere, sea views, and refreshing drinks, it’s the perfect place to pause, soak in the beauty, and embrace the slow island rhythm.

/// Zarace

A scenic bay surrounded by vineyards, with Beach Garden and other seafood restaurants serving fresh fish and shellfish. A serene spot to enjoy lunch with a panoramic view.

/// Milna & Mala Milna

We stayed in Milna, which was perfectly located for exploring nearby beaches. Both Milna and its smaller counterpart, Mala Milna, are family-friendly, with calm waters ideal for swimming and relaxing. The rocky shoreline makes the end-of-day light magical — golden sun reflecting off the rocks. Several restaurants offer fresh seafood and local dishes, and you can even grab something to enjoy on your balcony while watching the sunset in complete tranquility.

Recommended spots include Gostiona Kod Barba Božjeg in Milna for seafood and fresh local fish, and Gostionica Mala Milna in Mala Milna, right by the beach, serving simple yet delightful local cuisine. Both offer authentic flavors in a relaxed, intimate setting.

For a quieter experience, take the trail down to Plaza Velo Borče, a secluded cove rewarded with pristine surroundings — perfect for a peaceful swim or a moment of solitude away from the crowds.

/// Lucisca

A small, hidden cove perfect for early morning swims or late afternoon serenity, when the light softens and the beach feels private.

Beyond the Beaches

Hvar Town
The historic center is picturesque, with cobbled streets, lively squares, and beautiful architecture. It’s a place to wander slowly, enjoy a café, and soak in the town’s maritime heritage.

Beach Clubs
For a quieter beach experience near the Hvar city center and the Majerovica beach, the Falko Beach Bar offers sunbeds on stone terraces, good food, and a refined, relaxed atmosphere.

Stari Grad

Stari Grad is one of the oldest towns on Hvar, with narrow streets, white stone houses, and a quiet, authentic charm. The way the sunlight hits the limestone walls in the morning and late afternoon creates a warm glow, highlighting textures, wooden shutters, and the subtle shades of pastel doors. Walking through the town feels like stepping into a painting, where every corner invites slow exploration and quiet contemplation.

The town is also full of excellent dining spots. For local cuisine in a charming tucked-away square, I recommend La Gitana, a hidden gem serving fresh Mediterranean dishes. For a modern and cool spot to enjoy wine or cocktails, Lukrecija, located in a hidden alley, is perfect for a relaxed evening with a stylish vibe.
